We introduce phonics in the Nursery and this is continually built on through Reception and Key Stage 1. Initially “Jolly Phonics” is used where an action is linked to each sound. The “Letters and Sounds” programme is used alongside this and is continued throughout Key Stage 1.

Over the last year, we having been working with a phonics consultant, Nikki Elliston, who has delivered training to all staff and has helped to reorganise and fine tune our phonics programme. For those children needing a little extra help with their phonics, we run intervention programmes in addition to the daily phonics lessons. Opportunities are also provided within the classrooms for children to “bump” into phonics at other times of the day and to apply their phonics skills to reading and writing. Reading books in school have now been updated so that these fit in with the skills the children learn through their phonics sessions. We also use the on-line “Bug Club” reading scheme which children can access at home.
